WorldTime for Windows - Product Documentation
Shareware Version 2.0 S - 6/1/92
INTRODUCTION
------------
WorldTime for Windows is an easy-to-use worldwide clock utility
that runs within the Microsoft Windows environment.
WorldTime displays the current local time in any of over 150
metropolitan and geographic locations around the world.
WorldTime is flexible, too! Location selection is not limited
to the standard location database. With just a few keystrokes,
custom location names can be substituted for any of the
standard locations. This feature allows you to customize the
WorldTime location/time displays any way you see fit.
All configuration settings can be saved so as to be in effect
each time the program is run.
PROGRAM FILES
------- -----
The WorldTime 2.0 package consists of five files:
README.TXT
An introductory ASCII text file, containing program
notes and "quick and dirty" installation guidelines.
WTIME20.EXE
The executable program file.
WTIME20.INI
The initialization file, used for recording
all configuration information.
WTIME20.HLP
The Windows Help file, used for providing
comprehensive run-time help via the Windows Help
system. The help system is accessed via the menu
bar "Help/Contents" selection. Any help topic may
be easily printed through the Windows Help menu
bar "File/Print Topic" selection. A printable
registration form is included in this file.
WTIME20.TXT
This file, containing program information, notes,
general instructions, and a registration form (see
end of file).
PROGRAM NOTES
------- -----
WorldTime 2.0 runs within the Microsoft Windows environment
(versions 3.0 or higher), and requires the following:
* EGA or VGA graphics capability (VGA recommended).
* A Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing device.
WorldTime runs in 16-color mode, but will run acceptably
on monochrome or black & white EGA/VGA systems. The program
will run in any Windows 3.0+ operating mode.
VIDEO DRIVER NOTES
----- ------ -----
Generally, we do not recommend that this program be run at
video resolution higher than "Super VGA" 800x600.
Inconsistent or unacceptable video performance can result
when this program is run at non-standard resolutions in
excess of 800x600 (e.g., 1024x768), or through the use of
third-party video drivers.
For users of Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later wishing to run
Windows at Super VGA resolution, we generally recommend using
the excellent 800x600 video driver bundled with Windows. This
"plain vanilla" driver is fully tested, quick and convenient
to install, and actually provides faster video refresh rates
than many third-party 800x600 drivers.
SYSTEM CLOCK SETTINGS
------ ----- --------
WorldTime is dependent upon the accuracy of your computer's
system clock, and the DOS DATE and TIME settings which manage
it.
As a result, the most important thing to do BEFORE running
WorldTime is to make sure your computer's system clock (DOS
DATE and TIME) settings are accurate. This can be done from
the DOS prompt with the "DATE" and "TIME" commmands, through
the use of several popular setup utilities (e.g., Norton
Utilities, PC Tools, Landmark, etc.), through the use of your
computer's "built-in" BIOS SetUp procedure, or (perhaps most
conveniently) within Windows itself via the Control Panel's
DATE/TIME utility.
Consult your DOS operating system user's manual for full
explanations of the DATE and TIME functions.
INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
------------ ----------
1. We recommend making a backup copy of your program disk.
Keep the master copy in a safe place and use the backup
disk for program installation.
2. Although WorldTime can be run from a floppy disk, we
strongly recommend its installation to a hard disk.
To do this, copy the program files (WTIME20.EXE,
WTIME20.INI, and WTIME20.HLP) from your master disk to
an appropriate subdirectory on your hard disk (e.g.,
C:\TIME).
There is no copy protection, and no hidden files or
"key" files on the program disk, so the file copying
process can be accomplished with the DOS "COPY" command
or, if you prefer, through the Windows File Manager
menu bar "File/Copy" command.
This file, WTIME20.TXT, is NOT required in order to run
WorldTime. The three program files (WTIME20.EXE,
WTIME20.INI, and WTIME20.HLP), however, ARE required, and
must reside in the same directory in order for the program
to work properly.
3. You may use the "Windows Setup" utility to assign
WorldTime's program item (icon) to a program group.
Setup will recognize the WTIME20.EXE file and assign its
icon to a program group for you.
or...
You may assign a program item icon to WorldTime 2.0
manually, through the Program Manager menu bar "File/New"
command.
Always make sure that the correct path and filename
(e.g., "C:\TIME\WTIME20.EXE") is assigned to the WTIME20
program item. The "Browse" control in the Program Item
dialog box will make it easy to locate and assign the
correct path and filename.
4. If installed correctly, the program should load from
the Program Manager screen when the WorldTime icon is
double-clicked (or from File Manager when the WorldTime
listing is selected with "File/Run" or double-clicked).
WORLDTIME SETUP
--------- -----
WorldTime requires little in the way of configuration or
setup.
For WorldTime to function correctly, however, the program
must first be configured to your local time zone. This is
done via the menu bar "Configuration/Set Local" selection.
This menu bar selection opens the "Set Local Time Zone"
dialog box, which contains controls for selecting your local
time zone and toggling local Daylight Savings Time mode on
or off.
The drop down list box control accesses a list of all
standard time zones around the world. Use the keyboard
cursor control (arrow) keys or the list box scroller control
to browse the list. When you find your local time zone,
select it by clicking it with the mouse pointer.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME NOTE: If Daylight Savings Time is in
effect in your area, the "Daylight Savings Time" checkbox
control should be highlighted; if not, check to make sure
that the control is disabled.
HALF-HOUR TIME ZONE NOTE: If you live in a "half-hour" time
zone area (e.g., Australia's Northern Territory or South
Australia areas, India, Newfoundland, etc.), the "Half-Hour
Time Zone (+ :30)" checkbox control should be highlighted.
As long as your Local Time Zone list box selection is correct,
activating this control will make the necessary adjustments
to all international times displayed.
When your setting changes are complete, close the dialog box
by clicking the "OK" button with the mouse pointer. WorldTime
configurations are immediately updated.
This configuration process need only be made once (assuming
your computer is not moved to a different time zone).
Once configured, WorldTime displays your current local time in
the bottom display window.
All configuration settings are saved into the WTIME20.INI file
when you exit WorldTime via the menu bar "File/Close - Save
New Settings" command.
Note: Changes in your configuration will ONLY be saved if you
exit with the "Close - Save New Settings" procedure. Closing
WorldTime through any other method will exit the program
WITHOUT saving any new settings.
INTERNATIONAL LOCATION SELECTIONS
------------- -------- ----------
WorldTime for Windows was designed to provide a quick and easy
means of obtaining the correct time for dozens of locations
around the world.
Each of the six user-selected locations may be set via the
button-bar controls located at the top of the WorldTime screen.
The first control accesses a dialog box for selecting the
location and time displayed in the first fields, the second
control selects the location and time in the second field, and
so on.
In this way, each copy of WorldTime can be custom-configured to
always display just the locations and times the user desires.
To configure the location displayed in field one, click the
first button-bar control with the mouse cursor. This will open
the "Set Location 1" dialog box.
Simply scroll through the drop down listing of international
locations, and select the one you wish displayed. Once this is
done, clicking the mouse pointer on the OK button (or pressing
'Enter') will load the selection and close the dialog box.
WorldTime will then display the selected location and its local
time in the appropriate display fields.
The full compliment of over 150 international metropolitan and
geographic locations is available to each of the six display
fields. In addition, WorldTime allows users to custom
configure the location text in any or all of the six display
fields (see CUSTOM LOCATION NAMES).
Note: A "blank" item is provided at the beginning of each
locations list box, which may be selected to clear the display.
All location settings are saved to the WTIME20.INI file when
WorldTime is closed through the menu bar "File/Close - Save
New Settings" command. Configuration settings saved to the
WTIME20.INI file will be in effect each time the program is
run.
CUSTOM LOCATION NAMES
------ -------- -----
Although WorldTime's database of over 150 international
locations is more than enough for most purposes, the location
displays themselves can be custom-configured to display
virtually any name or label you desire. You can substitute
a city or town name, a geographic site, even a business or
personal name!
This is made possible with a Custom Location feature, which
allows the user to select any of WorldTime's standard
locations, then attach an "alias" name to that selection. The
custom name is then displayed in the appropriate window field
in place of the standard location. This feature is available
for each of the six display fields.
Here's how it works...
Let's say you wish to display the name and correct time of a
French city not included in the WorldTime database. This is
accomplished in three steps:
1. Open one of the "Set Location" dialog boxes and select
any city in metropolitan France (Paris, Lyon, Marseilles,
etc.). As long as the standard WorldTime selection is in the
same time zone (and subject to the same DST policies) as your
desired location, the time displays will remain accurate.
2. Enter the alternative display name in the edit control
window. This can be a city name, a business name, even the
name of a friend or relative. Up to 24 alphanumeric
characters (including spaces and punctuation) are allowed.
3. Enable the alternative location display by highlighting the
check box control to the left of the edit control field. When
this is done, close the dialog box by "clicking" the OK button
(or pressing the keyboard "ENTER" key). Your custom location
name will appear in WorldTime's interface screen in place of
the standard location.
When you exit WorldTime, make sure to use the "File/Close -
Save New Settings" method. This will save your alternative
location name so that it will be in effect the next time you
run WorldTime.
Using the check box control, you can easily toggle back and
forth between the standard WorldTime location name shown in
the list box control and your customized display name in the
edit control.
REMINDER: As with any of the standard configuration settings,
custom location names are written to WorldTime's INI file only
when the program is closed via the menu bar "File/Close - Save
New Settings" command.
EXITING WORLDTIME
------- ---------
There are several different ways to exit (close) WorldTime:
1. With the menu bar "File/Close - Save New Settings" command.
This is the preferred method if you are new to
WorldTime, since it automatically saves any
configuration settings that you might have changed
during the current session.
It is the ONLY method of closing WorldTime that
will save configuration setting changes made in
the current session.
2. With the menu bar "File/Exit" command.
This method is faster. It will leave the previous
configuration settings unchanged and discard any
setting changes you might have made in the current
session.
This method is preferred if you already have
WorldTime configured the way you like it, and don't
want to overwrite your WTIME20.INI file.
You can also close WorldTime by using the window
control menu (the "minus" sign icon in the
upper-left corner of the program window), the
Alt-F4 key-combination, or the Windows "Task List"
utility. Each of these methods works like the
"File/Exit" method described above; any new
configuration settings changes in the current
session will be discarded.
HELP
----
Comprehensive run-time help is available at any time through
the WorldTime menu bar "Help/Contents" command.
You can directly access any Help topic through the Contents,
or browse from topic to topic. Help topics may even be
printed through the Windows Help menu bar "File/Print Topic"
command.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IRREGULARITIES
-------- ------- ---- --------------
Daylight Savings Time is officially observed in the United
States from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in
October. Even so, there are certain areas within the U.S.
and its territories that DO NOT observe Daylight Savings Time.
These include the states of Arizona, Hawaii, parts of Indiana,
the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
As mentioned in the previous section, many countries in the
world observe some form of Daylight Savings Time.
Unfortunately, the dates of observance differ widely from
nation to nation (and, in the case of some countries in the
Southern Hemisphere, occur at the opposite time of year as do
those in the Northern Hemisphere).
Although WorldTime is capable of recognizing the Daylight
Savings Time periods observed in each of the locations listed,
this requires that both the TIME and DATE settings of your
computer's system clock be correct.
Note: In many parts of the world, the "official" policies
regarding Daylight Savings Time are extremely flexible, and
subject to periodic change. Future releases of WorldTime
will attempt to reflect any such changes as they come into
effect.
